Lesson request...diminished scales

Jim, if you ever have time, a great lesson would be a diminished scale workout. Something that covers all the tricks of the trade. Well, probably not all. I'd settle for 10%.
In the meantime, would "Arpeggios As Exercise" do the trick?

Any Lesson Recomendation ?

I bought, learn, and enjoy 3 lessons:
1) Chet Song: Wonderfull Lesson. Great musical experience.
2) American Hips: Great Riff Great Song, Great Lesson.
3) F Jazz Blues: A lot of new concepts....still fighting with it...

Now i am looking for a new lesson.....any recomendation for a Chilean Campilongo fan guitar player (strat + princeton)?

A question about the Travis lesson (and all lessons)

I have just begun to study the Travis lesson. I have a fair amount of playing experience (about 15 years) but almost no studying-experience or guitar lessons...I am pretty much self-taught with some study of music theory along the way. I can now see via Youtube etc that much of my technique is adequate and functional at least. I guess the form and structure of the instrument sort of dictates how you interact with it. Anyway...

I play with a flatpick mostly or with some small amount of rhythmic fingerpicking when I can manage it. I have always wanted to be able to use a flatpick and fingers. I have also always wanted to be able to use a thumbpick. Now that I am embarking on this Travis adventure, would it be best to try to use a thumbpick (pretty much totally new ground for me) or stick with a flatpick and fingers (slightly more comfortable)? In other words...a bunch of new stuff at once or keep some of the familiar technique intact?

How Did You First Discover Jim Campilongo?

I was rehearsing a few songs with a musician I was going to be playing with. She wanted me to improvise a lead over one of her newer songs. I was playing a Jazzmaster and using the whammy bar to bend up to certain notes in the lead. Kind of immitating that lick from the Chris Isaak tune, "Wicked Games".

When we were finished we hung out and talked music for a while. She said, "if you like 'bending notes' then you might like Jim Campilongo" (which I still laugh at because its such a simplification but I know what she meant at the time). I wrote his name down and looked at my list a few days later when I had time to do a few Google searches. I went to a few Living Room shows and was totally stunned. "The rest" as they say ,"is History".

.....I never ended up playing with the musician but it was totally worth it to get turned on to Jim's amazing talent and body of work.

Deluxe Reverb RI

Hello everyone,
I'm a huge Jim fan and I'm really pleased to be a part of this community.
I recently bought a Fender 65' Deluxe Reverb Reissue and I thought about changing a few stuffs to enhance the sound (speaker, tubes, changing the bias...).
I read a lot of stuffs and now, I feel a little bit lost. ;-)
I need a sweet, mellow clean sound, not too ice picky, great reverb.
Hope you could help me figure it out.

Jim, if you were a deluxe reverb user, what would you change on this amp ?

I know that a lot of people on the forum like to browse conversations and keep a certain anonymity and that is cool. However, I can’t help but wonder how many Jim fans are out there and where you guys and gals are from. I have now had the pleasure of having forum conversations with many of you and even meeting a few of you in person. So far, all of my “Campilongo Connections” have been really fantastic. We all clearly share not just an interest in Jim’s music but an overall passion for well crafted and expertly played songs in general. That being said, I would be very curious to see/hear a little more about my brothers & sisters on the forum. I don’t mind starting: I am 42 and have lived in NY City for the last 15 years. I am originally a native of Cleveland, Ohio (Let the jokes start rolling in!). I have been obsessed with guitars since I was in my early teens and started playing around age 16 after hearing Led Zeppelin IV (or Zoso, if you prefer:). I think it was Black Dog and Rock & Roll that made something inside of me flip. I have still not recovered from the experience. Anyway, I was turned on to Jim’s music less than two years ago and from there start getting into lessons by mail as well as new musical inspiration from Chet Atkins, to Roy Buchanan, to Jimmy Rivers, Jimmy Bryant, etc. The Lessons by Mail now only revitalized my love for the instrument but have sparked numerous creative endeavors that I had never before imagined. If anyone else wants to share some info, it would be cool to hear from you.
In the meantime, keep on jamming!

I caught Jim and Steve Cardenas at the Falcon in Marlboro, NY last week. Anyone know what he is playing at these acoustic gigs? Seemed to be a smaller bodied Martin with an orange-y sunburst. Unfortunately I didn't get a good shot of it in this clip-

Friends:
Mi actual gear is: Princeton + Strat.
After months of hard thinking I’ve decided to buy a new Fender Telecaster.
I live in the Chilean Patagonia, and here it’s not possible to find and try the different models.
So I have to buy one over the Internet, pretty much “in the dark”.
In the wide range of Fender Telecaster models: what do you recommend?
I’m leaning toward a model with that classic Telecaster sound, comfortable, and hopefully that it becomes my main guitar for many years to come.

princeton reissue help?

I first was exposed to jim's music through the video he did for the reissue princeton-in fact it made up my mind on the amp and I bought it.

I definately made the right choice-it's a great amp and i'm rarely away from it,however I was just wondering if theres anybody on here who can give me some advice.

When I crank the amp AND the bass it gets really flubby on the lows and sounds bad-If i'm gonna crank it I need my settings down to like 2 or 3 for the bass(and subsequntly for the treble).

Having read about jims own settings he can have the bass all the way up to 10-how can he do it? The only changes i'm aware he makes to his his amp are the bia and swapping the speaker,so are these the answer?

I don't particularly want to copy jims sound or anything. I can get a a good cranked tone out of my amp now but I feel there's a GREAT tone waiting to be had.

Any ideas?

Fender Baja Telecaster

Has anyone played or owned a Fender Baja Telecaster?

In the Sacramento area, not one authorized Fender dealer carries this model.
Both Guitar Center and Skips Music want you to pre-pay for the guitar in order for them to order it.
Basically you have to buy it first. The specs look good on paper for the price, I just would like to be able to try it, before I buy it.

Crazy Tube Circuits Stardust “Blackface”

I brought the Stardust Pedal to my "High Space" 55 Bar show last night and it's one of the best sounding, touch dynamic overdrive pedals I've ever played... The Stardust Pedal was very intuitive and it took me 4 seconds to dial in a great sound and a perfect balance... I was totally inspired by my sound all night.

The Stardust “Blackface has what I've been looking in a overdrive for a long, long time. A pedal that gives me some great beefy authentic vintage amp sounds, without having to crank the amp to overkill settings.

I easily dialed up some "Sticky Fingers" on steroids sounds, and achieved some thick Buchanan-isms too. Tone knob and volume swells were easily attained... Most importantly, my tone and volume controls are still responsive to fairly subtle variations.- many "ballsy" overdrives (OCD Pedal) eliminate the controls on the guitar.

Please note - I haven't tried to use Stardust “Blackface” Overdrive Pedal as a subtle booster yet, but for a "Santana Abraxas" like sound, this little powerhouse hit a home run.

This Ernest Ranglin record is one I've been touting for years. I love it and find it so dazzling and fun. Ernest plays like... if Django was born in the Caribbean. I think "hard copy" isn't easy to find... Sound clips etc here

hi ya Jim , and everyone else, i heard in your interview online with guitarist mag (i think) that you said you selected a warmer pickup for the sig model...... since many of us may not be able to afford the signature model as it stands ....and it sure sounds great from the clips i seen , but i saw the price was pretty steep , unless thats changed...... so for us working muso's with no trust funds.......would the pickups be available as a replacement set for us to pop in a tele....... cos i play jazz and that the warmer tele tone you ( Jim ) uses is incredible....it's "tone nivarna"

and if they NOT gonna be available ..what other options in the line of replacement pickups would Jim or anyone else recommend that someone uses to mod their tele for a warmer tone so as Jim said in the NAM interview to "not have that "punish the audience tele tone" heheheh i liked the way he put that ....

Monday Night is the New Saturday

Are there any Campy fans from NYC out there? If so, have you made it The Living Room lately? I am fortunate to live pretty close to the venue and have had the opportunity to witness the Electric Trio perform live on numerous occasions. After last night’s amazing performance, I feel compelled to tell all of my fellow New Yorkers and fellow Campilongo fans that the Monday night shows just keep getting more and more mind blowing. Jim and the Electric Trio consistently pull off beautifully crafted and expertly executed performances week after week. For those of you who have seen the trio live, I am sure you know what I am talking about. The Youtube clips, while certainly fun to watch, do not remotely do justice to capturing the live energy of the band. Last night’s show my friends, was one for the ages! From the familiar and always impressive opening riff of Monkey in a Movie, to the beautiful jangle of Prettiest Girl in New York, to the bone crushing versions of Helen Keller and Finger Puppet, to an unparalleled cover of Jim Hall’s Careful, to the sublime The Past is Looking Brighter & Brighter, to the always haunting Blues for Roy, and an extra slinky sounding Mr. & Mrs. Mouse complete with an unearthly bass solo courtesy of Mr. Crump, to the debut of From Scratch and (Look at the Freak? Not sure if I got the title right), to the most Rock n Roll versions of Twister and American Hips that you could possibly imagine, to the rollicking Red Light Green Light closer, the entire evening was a music lover’s dream. And to make the night even more of a success I met a fellow Lesson by Mail fan who was visiting with his wife from Canada. Prior to the show we discussed our most recent lessons and shared a few lesson recommendations. I never thought that I would say this, but Monday Night is my new Saturday! Thanks again to Jim and the Trio for kicking the week off with a bang! I’m already looking forward to next Monday…..

..and I figured out the "Country Soul Guitar".

For anyone who is looking to fill their bag a bit more, this really is a great lesson (although Jim, full disclosure...I didn't actually purchase this one, I figured it out on the You Tube and just sorta ran with it. I figured you would appreciate that. It hearkens back to the good ole cassette/album days, no?)

Anyway, once I figured out what Jim was actually doing, it really is easy to use those individual figures and add them to your bag of tricks.

I think what I really appreciate about Jim's lessons is that they are so much more than, "hey man....here's the licks I just played. Pay yer money and I'll hand them to you and you can regurgitate them"

Yeah...it's nothing like that. For me, these lessons are really expanding my knowledge base and my vocabulary. I'm a big John Scofield fan, I have an article from John that I always refer to and it reminds me of what I've been doing with Jim lately. Taking the concepts, making them work all over the board, and using them to express myself more better.

On that note...I'm going right now to buy the Twister lesson.

Thank you Jim Campilongo. Now....get yerself to Oregon. Or back to the Bay Area man. I'll go visit my people there to get a chance to see you.

Which are your favourite lessons in that style? Looking for something that could give me something to do, as I am kinda stuck in my playing at the moment:).

Wow, haven't seen Jim play a live show in an age, probably at the DuNord a few Decembers ago, so seeing him on Yoshi's stage was a quite a treat. Most of the show was a trio w/ Chris Kee on bass and Tony Mason on drums, a little East and a little West. It was great to see Jim strangle his Tele within an inch of it's life, but for a Princeton Reverb, being owned by Jim has to be some kind of Purgatory. That little amp and speaker were sweating pretty much the whole time, sometimes being given a short break when the guitar's volume was turned down, but it was getting pummeled a lot of the time with detuning and just playing wide open. Joe Goldmark and Erik Deutsch played pedal steel and organ respectively, on Chelsea Bridge and Folsom Prison Blues (both awesome...) All in all, a great, fun night out, and (another) illuminating 90+ minute guitar lesson from Jim, especially interesting to me was what and how he played when he was backing a soloist, understated but with rich harmony, letting things breathe. Very, very nice - thank you!!!

OK, I need a little help. I had a brain fart on the last song - big rave up, as Jim said, it got crazy...what's the name of that tune? It's driving me a little crazy here.....

1976 SFPR.

I figured this was the forum to announce that fact.

This is my second dance with this amp. I had a 74 a coupla years back, but I decided I was a tried and true EL84 guy. Now that I hooked up with this fella...I think I was not connecting with that particular amp. I really, really love this new one. It's in pristine condition, super clean (although it's at my tech now cause I don't know who has looked inside this thing in 35 years) and I have to say I am missing it. I gigged it on the first night it came into my possession...twas a Craigslist sale and he brought it to our gig and we did the deal just before the first set. It performed admirably and I was taken.

Anyway. Happy day to me. A Tele and a Godin 5th Avenue with a P90 have been making love with this Princeton. Happy about that fact.

I need a good cover for it. Any ideas?
